Gatewatching describes a step in the collaborative production of alternative online news publications. Rather than employing journalists and editors, such sites (like Slashdot or Indymedia frequently rely on their user communities who act as produsers to point out material that is relevant to other users.

Rather than traditional journalistic gatekeeping, which filters news events before publication according to journalistic (or sometimes political or commercial) criteria, such sites filter through what has already been published elsewhere (by journalists or primary sources), effectively publicising rather than publishing the news. They are watching the gates.
