Social negotiation is required for all face-to-face collaborations, and exists in computer-mediated collaboration in many forms. In the case of wikis such as Meta Collab or Wikipedia, social negotiation occurs mainly on the discussion pages, email lists and chat. |

Social negotiation is a subset of the first class collaborative element, cultural negotiation, which is itself a subset of information exchange. The amount and type of social negotiation involved in a collaborative process is linked to the characteristics of the collaborative media and the participants. (Expand this idea.)
Social negotiation is not required in some forms of computer-mediated collaboration (such as wiki editing), therefore it is not common to all collaborative situations and thus listed as a second class collaborative element.
