Social negotiation

Social negotiation is required for all face-to-face collaborations, and exists in computer-mediated collaboration in many forms. In the case of wikis such as Meta Collab or Wikipedia, social negotiation occurs mainly on the discussion pages, email lists and chat.

Social negotiation is currently listed as a second class collaborative element, meaning it is an element of all human collaborative situations.

Social negotiation is a subset of the first class collaborative element, cultural negotiation, which is itself a subset of information exchange. The amount and type of social negotiation involved in a collaborative process is linked to the characteristics of the collaborative media and the participants. (Expand this idea.)

Social negotiation is not required in some forms of computer-mediated collaboration (such as wiki editing), therefore it is not common to all collaborative situations and thus listed as a second class collaborative element.
